The University of Alberta is home to Stollery Children's Hospital, which is the main referral site for congenital cardiac surgery throughout most of Western Canada. It is also the referral site through the Fetal & Neonatal Cardiology Program for high risk pregnancies with a fetus with suspected congenital or acquired heart disease from within Alberta and from other Western provinces.

The Stollery Children’s Echocardiography Laboratory currently performs over 12,000 pediatric and 1800 fetal echocardiograms annually. In addition to standard 2D, M-mode and Doppler assessments of congenital and acquired pediatric heart disease, the laboratory employs state-of-the-art technologies including tissue Doppler and speckle tracking for myocardial function assessments, and 3D imaging on a daily basis.
